Project Description

The MSU Alumni Club of Metro Chicago is leading an Adopt-a-Beach™ cleanup day at Montrose Beach and Bird Sanctuary in conjunction with Michigan State University's annual Global Day of Service. Spartan volunteers will spend the afternoon beautifying the beach in preparation for spring and collecting data for the Alliance for the Great Lakes. With over 26 miles of lakefront, Chicago’s beaches are one of the City’s greatest resources and need your help to keep them pristine! Supplies will be provided for volunteers, but we encourage you to bring your own work gloves and rakes if you own them. Be prepared for the weather… Spring in Chicago can be very unpredictable, especially by the Lake! Volunteers should arrive by 11am and meet in front of the concession stand on Montrose Beach, directly off of N Simons Dr (head northeast towards the water). Look for the Michigan State flag and check-in tent. Volunteer leaders will be wearing bright green shirts. There is ample parking available throughout the park. More about Adopt-a-Beach™: This is Alliance for the Great Lake’s premier volunteer program, with nearly 15,000 participants ranging from individuals and families to schools and businesses. Teams remove litter and enter results into our Adopt-a-Beach™ online system to share with local beach authorities, educate the public and improve beaches. More about the Bird Sanctuary: A small finger curling out into the lake, the Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary can boast in having over 300 species recorded, including some of the rarest birds ever recorded in the state. A small stretch of low-lying bushes and small trees on the west side of the sanctuary in particular have been a magnet for migrating songbirds and rarities. Thank you to our event sponsor, KIND bar!
