Project Description

ABOUT CAPITAL AREA FOOD BANK: The Capital Area Food Bank is taking hunger off the map. The CAFB is the largest organization in the Washington metro area working to solve hunger and its companion problems: chronic undernutrition, heart disease, and obesity. By partnering with 444 community organizations in DC, MD, and VA, as well as delivering food directly into hard to reach areas, the CAFB is helping 540,000 people each year get access to good, healthy food. That’s 12% of our region’s mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, and grandparents. Hunger affects every single neighborhood in our region. It impacts people of every age, race, religion, and ethnicity. And it hurts. Hunger robs children of a chance to learn, undermines health, and makes getting and holding good jobs hard. VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: The Capital Area Food Bank Urban Demonstration Garden creates an opportunity for volunteers to participate in the mission of the food bank. Volunteers play a crucial role in building and growing the garden. This project includes a wide variety of tasks associated with creating the infrastructure of the garden like digging, building, painting, planting and getting your hands dirty. The DC Spartans will be helping to bring the food bank’s Urban Demonstration Garden to life. DC Spartans will also be participating in Face Hunger™, a hands-on simulation and discussion activity that raises awareness and understanding of hunger. Check out the Face Hunger page on the website for a video and more information https://www.capitalareafoodbank.org/programs/face-hunger DRESS: Please dress appropriately for outdoor work in clothes that can get dirty. DRIVING DIRECTIONS: Parking is available for those that would like to drive. Follow the Volunteer Parking arrow sign. Continue towards the back of the food distribution center. You will then see the Volunteer Area. Park your car in any of the available spaces located in the Volunteer/Staff parking lot. METRO DIRECTIONS: The closest metro stations are Brookland/CUA and Ft. Totten, which are accessible on the red line. There are shuttles that can pick up volunteers from each of these metro stations, please see instructions below. We also have DC Spartan Board members who are happy to pick up volunteers that may be metroing as well, please let Lauren Syring know if you need a ride - syringlaa@gmail.com. A CAFB shuttle van can pick up volunteers from the Brookland/CUA & Ft. Totten Metro Stations. The shuttle van will have the Capital Area Food Bank logo on the side - The morning pick-up times at the Brookland Station will be 7:45am and 8:15am - The morning pick-up times at the Ft. Totten Station will be 7:15am and 8:45am - Return shuttle service will also be provided at the end of our volunteer activity (If you do not see the shuttle van upon arrival or if you are running late, please call 202-327-1929 to request a ride.) We look forward to volutneering with you for the DC Spartans GLOBAL Day of Service! GO GREEN!
